Products & Services
Genera offers state-of-the-art industrial scale biomass feedstock supply solutions TODAY that are commercial ready and offer compelling economics for both landowners upstream and biomass processors downstream. Genera offers a range of products and services related to all aspects of biomass supply, including early stage project assessment and feasibility studies, developing and implementing land management strategies, performance of a range of agricultural and logistics management services such as energy crop establishment, maintenance, harvesting, aggregation, storage, inventory management, and transportation, as well as a range of pre-processing services such as characterization, compaction, and size reduction.
Some of the most critical questions about any biomass supply solution relate to the assumptions about land availability, access, terms of commitment, and productivity. Targeted land selection and contracts tailored to local conditions, customs, and competition are a major factor in the feasibility and success of any biomass supply solution. We understand that while production agriculture benefits from technology and inputs and management expertise, production agriculture – particularly when it comes to perennial energy crops – is really a people business at its core. The cheapest acre is not always the best and the best acre is not always the highest priority. We develop long-term relationships with local landowners and farmers to identify, recruit, and acquire long-term contracts for access to or production from the most suitable land for a particular biomass supply project. We balance cost and risk to ensure that our land management solutions are sustainable and practical and offer the best value to both our upstream landowner partners and our downstream biomass processing customers.
Energy Crop Production
Genera has assembled a team of agronomists, agricultural economists, and agricultural engineers with the most comprehensive and broadest experience found in the industry today, particularly related to the establishment and management of purpose grown energy crops. We’re not in the business of crop breeding and genetics. But we do continually evaluate and trial genetic material to ensure we find and use the best available genetics and collaborate with and benefit from the best the industry has to offer in plant breeding and biotech. We have worked with our farm and university partners to establish and manage more than 5,000 acres of purpose grown energy crops, mostly switchgrass, but also including several varieties of miscanthus, mixed warm season native grasses, arundo, and several varieties of biomass sorghum, sweet sorghum, and sorghum Sudan. We have worked extensively with leading equipment companies to trial and improve equipment and management practices for energy crops and have worked with leading chemical input providers to evaluate weed control strategies, seed treatments, and other ways to improve stand vigor and yield.
Once a crop or residue is produced in a field and harvested, there is still a lot more that has to happen to turn crops in fields into a uniform industrial feedstock suitable for downstream processing. The logistics of handling, aggregating, staging, storing, monitoring, inventorying, characterizing, loading, transporting, and delivering that biomass require sophisticated logistics management systems. Genera’s team understands and has applied experience all along the logistics chain transforming crops in fields to biomass feedstocks delivered for processing. Ultimately, the consistency, quality, and cost of a biomass feedstock solution are only as reliable as the logistics systems that manage the crop post-harvest. Genera’s team works with a variety of partners along this logistics chain to continually innovate and improve our feedstock logistics systems.
The agriculture industry has considerable understanding of and experience with the movement, handling, and flow of corn and other major grain crops. The ag and forest industries also have considerable experience moving and handling biomass crops when they are wood chips destined for pulping or hay or grass or biomass residue destined for the animal agriculture market. But moving biomass crops, particularly energy crops and ag residues, into a biorefinery process is new territory for much of the ag industry. Genera has unique facilities and unparalleled experience with various types of mechanical pre-processing and conveyance that can have a significant impact on costs for downstream processors. Genera has focused intently on developing systems and processes that are tailored to the safe and efficient handling, conveyance, grinding, hammermilling, compaction, compression, separation, and characterization of various types of biomass feedstock. Genera has experience processing and delivering grass crops, corn stover, sugar cane bagasse, and woody biomass that meet a range of end product specifications and packaging, ranging from coarse bulk chop material to finely milled material to ultra-compressed bales and compacted bulk material. Your project can benefit from what Genera has learned about the safe handling of biomass feedstocks during pre-processing. We can work with you to identify the right equipment and systems that are the best balance with respect to capital cost, operating and maintenance cost, energy efficiency, labor utilization, safety, risk, quality, and environmental compliance.
Tools & Resources
Genera has developed a proprietary modelling framework that incorporates some of the most sophisticated databases available with respect to land use, productivity, transportation networks, and costs of production tailored to specific crops, varieties, management practices, equipment, and other inputs. At our core, we are an agribusiness and we understand the people side of agriculture and the dynamic nature of decision making and risk in agriculture. We have incorporated this expertise into our integrated GIS-based modelling system and can tailor it to local conditions and circumstances to develop bioshed assessments, project feasibility studies, due diligence reports, and feedstock execution plans. We can help our industry partners make sound business decisions and investments, leveraging Genera’s comprehensive and integrated feedstock and logistics modelling systems and our team’s expertise and experience that turn data into real knowledge.
